چکیده

Context. Red giants are evolved stars which exhibit solar-like oscillations. Although a multitude of stars have been observed with space telescopes, only a handful of red-giant stars were targets of spectroscopic asteroseismic observing projects. Aims. We search for solar-like oscillations in the two bright red-giant stars γ Psc and θ1 Tau from time series of ground-based spectroscopy and determine the frequency of the excess of oscillation power νmax and the mean large frequency separation ∆ν for both stars. Seismic constraints on the stellar mass and radius will provide robust input for stellar modelling. Methods. The radial velocities of γ Psc and θ Tau were monitored for 120 and 190 days, respectively. Nearly 9000 spectra were obtained. To reach the accurate radial velocities, we used simultaneous thorium-argon and iodine-cell calibration of our optical spectra. In addition to the spectroscopy, we acquired VLTI observations of γ Psc for an independent estimate of the radius. Also 22 days of observations of θ Tau with the MOST-satellite were analysed. Results. The frequency analysis of the radial velocity data of γ Psc revealed an excess of oscillation power around 32 μHz and a large frequency separation of 4.1±0.1 μHz. θ1 Tau exhibits oscillation power around 90 μHz, with a large frequency separation of 6.9±0.2 μHz. Scaling relations indicate that γ Psc is a star of about 1 M⊙ and 10 R⊙. θ1 Tau appears to be a massive star of about 2.7 M⊙ and 10 R⊙. The radial velocities of both stars were found to be modulated on time scales much longer than the oscillation periods. Conclusions. The estimated radii from seismology are in agreement with interferometric observations and also with estimates based on photometric data. While the mass of θ1 Tau is in agreement with results from dynamical parallaxes, we find a lower mass for γ Psc than what is given in the literature. The long periodic variability agrees with the expected time scales of rotational modulation.

The MultiSite Spectroscopic Telescope campaign : 2 m spectroscopy of the V 361 Hya variable PG 1605 + 072

We present results and analysis for the 2m spectroscopic part of the MultiSite Spectroscopic Telescope (MSST) campaign undertaken in May/June 2002. The goal of the project was to observe the pulsating subdwarf B star PG1605+072 simultaneously in velocity and photometry and to resolve as many of the >50 known modes as possible, which will allow a detailed asteroseismological analysis. We have ob...

Velocity curve analysis of spectroscopic binary stars EQ Tau, V376 And, V776 Cas, V2377 Oph and V380 Cygni by nonlinear regression

Using measured radial velocity data of five double-lined spectroscopic binary systems EQ Tau, V376 And, V776 Cas, V2377 Oph and V380 Cygni, we find corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements via the method introduced by Karami & Teimoorinia and Karami & Mohebi. Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by others using more traditional methods.

A mathematical model of multisite phosphorylation of tau protein

Abnormal tau metabolism followed by formation of tau deposits causes a number of neurodegenerative diseases called tauopathies including Alzheimer's disease. Hyperphosphorylation of tau protein precedes tau aggregation and is a topic of interest for the development of pharmacological interventions to prevent pathology progression at early stages. The development of a mathematical model of multi...

Coordinated Multiwavelength Observations of V410 Tau

In November 2001 we undertook a coordinated observing campaign to study the connection between X-ray and optical variability in the weak-line T Tauri star V410 Tau. The observing plan included three ∼ 15 ksec observations with Chandra using the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer for Spectroscopy (ACIS-S) scheduled for different phases of the known 1.87 d starspot cycle. Photometric and spectrosc...

X - ray and optical bursts and flares in YSOs : results from a 5 - day XMM - Newton monitoring campaign of L 1551

We present the results of a five-day monitoring campaign with XMM-Newton of six X-ray bright young stellar objects (YSOs) in the star-forming complex L1551 in Taurus. All stars present significant variability on the five-day time scale. Modulation of the light curve on time scales comparable with the star's rotational period appeared to be present in the case of one weak-lined T Tauri star. Sig...
